Wadi Rum is a protected area covering 720 square kilometers of dramatic desert wilderness in the south of Jordan. Huge mountains of sandstone and granite emerge, sheer-sided, from wide sandy valleys to reach heights of 1700 meters and more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains and many conceal ancient rock drawings etched by the peoples of the desert over millennia. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Rum and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape.

There are many ways to enjoy the attractions of Rum, including jeep, camel and hiking tours and you can stay overnight in a Bedouin tent and gaze at the amazing panoply of stars.

To safeguard its unique desert landscape, Wadi Rum was declared a protected area in1998 and an intensive conservation programme is now underway.

There are opportunities and challenges associated with Community-based tourism in Wadi Rum as elsewhere in the world. It is for certain that Bedouin people at Wadi Rum depend strongly on tourism and that we need your support!

The southern Jordanian desert has been frequented by nomads and migrating travelers for thousands of years. There is evidence that Nabatean people, who build Petra, and the ancient Thamud tribe, relatives to the Nabateans, passed through the area and numerous rock inscriptions document the human influence in this vast desert area. It is notable that Lawrence of Arabia had his base near Wadi Rum during his stay in the region.

Although most visitors to Wadi Rum are mainly in awe with its landscapes and the night sky, there is abundant desert life to be found. Tenebrionid beetles, reptiles, snakes and lizards, and other desert folks can be found and observed on desert excursions. Specially adapted plants survive the harsh climate and water stress. In 2002 a small herd of Arabian Oryx antelope were allocated for re-introduction in the Wadi Rum area. To date the animals have not yet been successfully released, however attempts for protection of the environment and improved conservation are being made.

OUR CAMP

Wadi Rum Full Moon Camp is located in the Wadi Rum protected area, 7 km from Rum village and 15 Km from the Wadi Rum Visitor's Center. The camp is close to the spectacular Small Rock Bridge and the famous Khazali canyon. It is a traditional Bedouin campsite which can accommodate up to 30 person.
Our campsite is at the very foot of the Umrashed mountain, which is perfect to climb and enjoy the sunset in the desert with the best panorama of Wadi Rum. It is a very peaceful and secluded place, allowing you to experience the silence and the magic of the desert. At night you won't be disturbed by any light other than that of the moon and stars.

Description of our camp:

There is a main tent with 2 large separate rooms, one for the fireplace and dinner and the other one for the special meetings, and smaller private rooms for sleeping. There are also few smaller separate tents, each of which for two people. Most people choose to sleep under the stars or within the large tents, but we offer these smaller tents if you wish to have more privacy. There are also tents for families, enough for up to 5 people. We have a nice outside sitting area with comfortable seats and fireplace in the middle for the warm nights when you can enjoy the stars and the moon.

In the camp we have showers & toilets. There is a kitchen to prepare our traditional Bedouin food (mansaf, zarb, kapsah, magloobah). All the tents are equipped with everything needed for a comfortable night in the desert: mattresses, blankets, pillows and candles, so that there's no need to have a sleeping bag.

We can also be flexible if you wish to put a private tent outside the campsite, for example on the mountain in front of the camp.
We can prepare a nice water pipe for a small extra charge.

*Please contact us directly if you are a big group or if you want to book the whole camp for the private functioning.

Tour #7
Climb the Burdah Arch

Burdah Arch is deservedly one of the best known and the most spectacular sites in Wadi Rum. It is situated about 300meters above the sand and the views from there are magnificent. This time we offer it as an addition to our normal jeep tour.
As usual we start in the village and drive first to Lawrence's Spring and then to the red sand dunes in Wadi Um Ishrin and to Jebel Anafishiya where you can also see some Nabatean inscriptions. We continue to the Barragh Canyon. Here we have lunch.
After lunch we proceed to Jebel Burdah and climb the Arch. We come down from the back, and cross a rocky plateau before reaching the Arch itself. The climb is not a hike - you will need to use your hands over the rocks and you will be happier if you have a fairly good head for heights, but it is straightforward with no real need for a rope. Any adult who is reasonably fit can do this climb, but it is not suitable for children under 16 years old. The climb and the descent normally take about 3 to 4 hours. The continuation to the summit of the mountain is much more difficult and is not included in this trip.
When we come down we shall usually return to the camp for dinner, since it will probably be close to sunset. In the summer, if we have time we can call quickly at the Um Fruth Bridge.
Footwear: Obviously boots are better here, but they are not essential. Good walking shoes with cotton socks will do quite well.
Other equipment: You will also need a rucksack or shoulder bag for water, and such oddments as your camera, sunscreen, a light sweater according to season and perhaps some biscuits for a snack.

Price : for 2-3 people 75JD per person, for 4 people or more 65JD/person. This includes all meals and sleeping equipment.
