The Farah Hospital is an institution specialized in the art of obstetrics, gynaecology and assisted reproduction. The story of The Farah Hospital began in 1978 with a small clinic specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology serving around 25-30 patients daily. This small modest clinic was founded and run by Dr. Zaid Kilani who later on established The Farah Hospital.

There were key milestones in the history of The Farah Hospital. In 1985 just a few years after the birth of the first IVF baby in Great Britain, Dr. Zaid Kilani decided to venture into a journey that proved to be indeed bitter and challenging at the beginning yet sweet and rewarding at the end. This was the journey of introducing IVF to the country and the region. After months of hard work and hardship, the first IVF baby was born in Jordan. The date was 1st of May 1987. That day indeed changed the lives of thousands of couples in the country and the region.

The workload increased afterwards and in 1990, Dr. Zaid decided to expand his unit in order to serve better his patients, both Jordanian and non Jordanian flocking from neighbouring countries. Work on the new extension, which was now a 4 storey building was completed in 1994 and was inaugurated by his Majesty the Late King Hussein of Jordan.

The next milestone in the history of The Farah Hospital was in 2001. This was the year when the new major extension was completed. The Farah Hospital now is a 12 storey building specialized in the art of obstetrics, gynaecology and assisted reproduction and serving other disciplines of medicine including paediatrics & neonatology, plastic surgery and ENT just to mention a few.

Assisted Reproduction and Technology Unit (A.R.T):

The assisted reproduction and technology unit (A.R.T) at The Farah Hospital is one of the largest worldwide. It serves around 4000 infertile couple a year and is considered to be a referral centre for tough cases suffering from repeated IVF failures. It is usually the first unit in Jordan and the region to introduce the latest technologies related to assisted reproduction. This large patient population coupled with excellent success rates led to the A.R.T unit at The Farah Hospital to be a major attraction for leading infertility centres and pharmaceutical companies worldwide for collaboration in research and development. Indeed The Farah Hospital is on the forefront of many clinical research trials.

The contribution of The Farah Hospital doesn't end there. In addition, The Farah Hospital has been actively involved in helping neighbouring countries in establishing their own A.R.T units to serve their communities.

In May 2005, The Farah Hospital was awarded a shield of appreciation by Professor Robert Edwards, the pioneer who along with the late Patrick Steptoe introduced the IVF technology to the world. The shield was in recognition of Dr. Kilani's and Farah Hospital's contribution to the congress celebrating the birth of 2 million IVF babies since 1978. The ceremony took place in London.

Obstetrical Care:

The art and science of obstetrics have witnessed tremendous breakthroughs in the last few decades. Over the years the philosophy of the Farah hospital has been to introduce the latest technologies and expertise in the hope that it would lead to a healthy pregnancy culminating in a healthy baby and a healthy mother.

Expectant mothers at The Farah Hospital are classified broadly into two groups: low risk and high risk. Several factors come into play when classifying them including: mother’s age, pregnancy with twins, triplets…, history of recurrent pregnancy losses, gestational diabetes, and hypertension to mention a few. According to the information gathered and according to which group the mother falls under, each pregnant lady at The Farah Hospital gets a tailor made ante-natal plan to help her sail through her pregnancy with maximum enjoyment and minimal stress and discomfort. After all, pregnancy is not a disease but rather a normal physiological process.

With regards to labour and delivery, The Farah Hospital believes that it is of paramount importance for the expectant parents to enjoy their time in the delivery ward. Whether a normal vaginal delivery or a cesarean section, the couple should enjoy their experience so that they would look forward for future pregnancies and deliveries rather than have a phobia from the labour ward!

In May 2007, The Farah Hospital inaugurated a new labour and delivery ward. The new ward stands out to be a technological feat and is designed architecturally to reflect this image. It is located on the tenth floor with panoramic views of the capital Amman. Even the caesarian section theatre has a view for mothers undergoing surgery under spinal or epidural to enjoy!

Neonatal care:

One of the pillars of The Farah Hospital is its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU at The Farah Hospital serves to ensure that parents, obstetricians and paediatricians/neonatologists feel comfortable and their minds at ease to know that whatever complication might arise, their baby is in safe hands and in a safe environment. The unit is equipped with the state of the art machines and is run by experienced, friendly and empathic doctors and nurses.

The policy at The Farah Hospital is to have one nurse look after one baby (one to one ratio). In some instances, babies spend as much as 8 weeks in the unit, sometimes more. This policy ensures better medical care and ensures that the nurse has more continuity and harmony with her baby and parents rather than being seen by a different nurse each time. One of the most difficult times that our nurses and doctors have to deal with is discharging the baby from the NICU!

In cases where surgical intervention is indicated, The Farah Hospital provides specialized and experienced surgeons and anaesthetists to take care of the baby. Our doctors have operated on patients as young as 23 hours and as small as 645 grams (born at 28wks gestation) with fantastic results.

Gynaecological care:

Whether an adolescent girl or a post-menopausal woman, The Farah Hospital provides comprehensive care and treatment for all age groups. Our clinics welcome patients presenting with many conditions/complaints including: poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, irregular menstruation, post-menopausal bleeding, infertility, uterine fibroids, endometriosis… In addition, we have a specialized gynaecology clinic running: “The Well Woman Clinic”. This is a specialized clinic that women visit on a yearly basis. During such visits, women are examined to make sure that they are healthy and their gynaecologic system is working perfectly.

The clinics are equipped with the state of the art machines that help the gynaecologist confirm a diagnosis or just reassure the lady that everything is fine.

Where as a case requires surgical intervention (e.g., hysterectomy, myomectomy…), The Farah Hospital offers state of the art operating theatres, equipment and expertise. We have extensive experience with laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries.
